Ethnic and Gender Studies (EGS)

Mission Statement

The Ethnic and Gender Studies (EGS) Department aspires to create spaces for all students to interrogate systems of power, oppression, and acts of resistance and to develop their potential as agents of social change in an increasingly diverse and stratified society.

Departmental goals

Students in Ethnic and Gender Studies (EGS) courses will be able to:

  • Describe the specific histories and cultures of people of color, especially women and non-binary people of color, as foundational to the U.S. and the world.
  • Analyze the systemic and institutional nature of colonialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and heteronormativity.
  • Evaluate how experiences of race and ethnicity intersect with other social and political constructs such as gender, sexuality, and class.
  • Identify and articulate when, where, and how Indigenous and people of color engage in resistance against oppression.
